Hi Peter Valentine again. Sceptic Sid who is a nice guy but one who has been fed a constant stream of misinformation from the tabloid press as well as the myths and down right untruths of certain nationalist political parties, came round to see me again last week about abolishing England, I imagine he has been down the pub and some loud mouth has been going on about England being included in some EU Region and therefore abolished!

Going back a few years a map of the EU Regions within the member states was published showing, correctly, that Scotland and Northern Ireland are UK regions in their own right but instead of England (which is NOT a region) it showed the 9 regions that are! On such flimsy grounds a major UKIP/BNP myth was created and seized on by lots of people who prefer slogans to getting the facts.

Anyway this myth has been given some space by the sceptics, who fail to learn the truth of the matter. England is not a member of the EU, and neither are Scotland and Ireland. The UK is one of the 27 sovereign states of the Union, and its regions, set by the UK Parliament not Brussels are the 11 regions mentioned above. So to abolish any part of the UK would mean the UK agreeing to be abolished! For such a step all 27 states would have to vote yes, and the ruling would have to apply to everyone, abolishing France, Germany Italy and so on.

I asked him if he was aware of any of those Turkeys voting for Christmas! And then we had a good laugh and enjoyed a friendly pint of good English bitter!
